The VM Motori engine has been in production since 1947 when Claudio Vancini and Ugo Martelli, two innovative Italian engineers produced the first air-cooled diesel engine with direct injection i.e. where fuel is injected into the combustion chamber in the piston crown producing some of the most efficient engines with significant fuel economy.

Early diesel engines employed mechanical fuel pumps to pressurise the fuel as a means of injecting it into the cylinder combustion chamber area.

Most modern diesel engines use the common rail system with the fuel injection constantly monitored and controlled by electronics.
